DIY USB cables

If you have an exisitng RJ45 patch panel and RJ45 wall plate(s), sure you could convert both ends of the connection using the adaptor shown above with short USB style jumpers at each end...

It is a pointless exercise if you are trying to gain distance or simply "build" your own cable, as you are still limited to the 5 meters per hop and a maximum of 5 hops and quality 5 meter USB cables are dirt cheap if you know where to look.

I have seen cables (hdmi) that are designed for this sort of thing...they come in parts (end plugs and main cable) with ps/2 style connectors. So you run the cable through a conduit, and plug the end-pieces (with the appropriate termination plug) onto each end.

There's nothing really special about the wires in a usb cable though (unlike cat5), so your best bet is to simply buy the appropriate length cable, cut one end off (leaving several inches of cable on the plug side), run it, and then splice it back together.

Margrave,

The cables you are speaking of are "RapidRun" by cablestogo. They do not have a USB version. Also, the cable is important with USB. The longer the cable, the more important its construction becomes (timing and Ohm's law again).

This application is to conect a remote Neptune EB8 to its Apex base unit 70 feet away. I haven't ordered the system yet but as I understand it Neptune uses USB connectors, but it is not a USB device and neither device is powered by the cable.
