Hey Gang, I am totally new to this web site and reef tanks. I have been told and read that I should and should not use a skimmer? Any suggestions ? Thanks

WELCOME! A protein skimmer is the best investment you can possibly make in your tank. Buy the biggest and best you can afford for your tank. Don't cut corners with a cheap one, or 6 months from now it will be in a closet, and you will be spending money to buy the one you should have purchased in the first place.

I started with crap and 2 weeks later I got something good. I would say it is the best thing on my tank as far as cleaniness and fish health goes, Thete was a big difference between the 2 models. Good luck and you have come to a great place to learn from. I know I have,
Scott

Agree!

While not 100% necesary, it will make your life 100% easier. Protein skimmers are just about the greatest thing ever.

There are experienced hobbyists who run skimmerless reefs. It is a matter of debate to use or not use a skimmer. Skimmerless systems still feature elaborate system designs and frequent water changes. So what you have heard is a topic of debate. Both system designs, if followed correctly are successful.. Some of these issues are addressed in The Reef Aquarium Vol 3.

The majority of reefers, as I, choose to use quality skimmers with a DSB or plenum filtration system. Trickle filters are also being faded out as the new trend is to add a sump-a-fuge. My gallery has such a design for building one. It may give you some ideas.

Tillerman, my best advise to you would be to invest $80 in the book. It is a must have for anyone who is currently setting up or remodeling a reef tank. It addresses issues on design, water chemistry, plumbing, electrical, etc. It is not like any other book you will find for a "new aquarium." It is more scientific.

Yes I agree 100% on getting a protien skimmer. I have a Coralife 65 Super Skimmer. Every other day I am removing a Collection Cup of very dark green water. Just think without that all that junk is staying in your tank. Best $100 dollars spent.

People without skimmers don't have fish....:D Personally, I like a fully stocked reef, so a skimmer is a must.

There are some people who run very nice and healthy reefs without a skimmer. IMPHO, I would NOT run a reef tank without one.

And to echo other posts, don't buy cheap. But for some reason if you do decide to buy cheap, let me know because I have three cheapo's in my closet collecting dust that I can let you have. :D

Learning from your mistakes is great. Learning from others mistakes is even better.

Once you dump that first collection cupfull, you'll know why the strong majority are going to tell you to buy a skimmer and buy a good one. I guarantee you will not want to pour it back into your tank.
