I have an addiction to going to my local LFS and creating "unforeseen" frag expenses and such. Since I am a coral buying addict, I want to know any trade secrets from successful hobbyists.

Where do you most of the time buy your frags from?

i usually buy them from the LFS, but im just now getting to where i can start fragging some of mine. im looking at starting a local club for that reason the meet others local, and trade/buy frags from them as well.

I cant remember that last time I bought a coral at an LFS...

I mostly do trading/buying through the local club.

I have a few tank buddies. It is great!! Whenever I buy something new I frag it and give them pieces. Whenever they buy something new they frag it and give it to me. And I look at it as a HUGE safety. For instance if (god forbid) my tank were to crash, instead of losing all the money I spent on corals I can just re-setup and get all my corals back from them via frag. And it has kinda turned into a semi competition. Who can get the coolest coral to frag. And we have also gone in together before and purchased a coral that was wayyyy to expensive for one of us to afford, fragged it and all been happy.

Yeah like friends you meet in this forum and from other places that are reefers, you know?

I am surprised as a newb that a whole bunch of you are doing peer frag trades and selling instead of thru the LFS. This is news to me.

I have spent in excess of $300 in coral specimen so far and the choices aren't that great in the LFS. You buy overpriced frags that is kind-of what you like but not really.

How can I find local clubs like you guys? What if I don't know how to frag? Can I still join the club to at least meet and admire people's setup and hopefully buy frags from them?

I've been s u ckered in by LFS's. Wow.

This poll is really cool for me. Definitely a learning experience.

archie,
not sure if there is a club around you, but if there is I am sure you can join. our club INDMAS only charges $20 annually for dues.

most of the time selling is common among reefers because not everyone does propagation. you can even find lots of mail trading here on RC..

....I think the annual thermos trade is going on right now or soon to start...

trading with fellow reefers not only gets you cheaper prices, but it also allows you to meet other people in the hobby. Heck, you could even start your own club if there is not one around. I would check first in the club fourm on RC, its located down next to the selling forums. you might find one on there thats close to you!

I got you the link
RC club forum

Good luck

You should look at NCFRAG.org.

I grew up in Charlotte and looked at this group once. I didnt have a reef at the time so I never actually traded with them. They used to have a group on Yahoo.com named NCFRAG. I think they do most of their meeting in and around Raleigh... so its not terribly far from you.

GO PANTHERS!

I have a group of friends that share our corals with each other...when they grow, or spread we share the wealth with each other for free.
