Do you clean your sand bed in your refugium?

I pushed the Macro aside last night and noticed a thick layer of detritus on the sand bed under the macro. I will be sucking it out today.

So the question is, do you clean up your sand bed in the refugium and if so, how often?

I vacuum out the detritus when it gets too thick (about 6 months).
