Do you rinse your chaeto?

Quite a bit of debris has built up in my huge wad of chaeto in my sump. Do I need to rinse it out periodically to get all of that garbage out??

I would! But you need to use salt water, as fresh water will likely kill the chaeto.

You can see the impact a small amount of dirt has by placing a spec of it in a cup of newly mixed saltwater and test for nitrates after 2 days. You will be surprised.

Fwiw, I dont like chaeto for that reason, but rather prefer grape caulerpa as it does not trap dirt so readily.

I do. fill a large plastic pitcher with tank water and swirl the cheato around in it. I then put the cheato back and poor the water from the pitcher through a strainer. This way, I can catch the pods and return them to the fuge.
