dolphin pump question

I have a dolphin amp master 2100 pump for my return. I have a ball valve at the intake and another one right after the discharge. My problem is that the pump is so strong that it is blowing my frags off of the frag tray, I would like to turn my ball valve a little to slow down the return to the tank, but I don't want to mess up my pump. This is what is says at dolphinpump.com in the helpful tips.

"Always install ball valves after the intake and discharge unions of the pump. This will allow for easy pump removal and maintanence. The discharge ball valve can also be used as a flow control to achieve any desired flow rate without harming the pump."

So my question is, can I turn the ball valve after the return to slow down the flow going back to the tank? I'm think that is the way I read it, but I don't want to mess up a $200 and something dollar pump.

Thanks,
