Does anyone have experience keeping these in a large (home, not institutional or public) aquarium? Was wondering if it is possible if one is willing to dedicated a large specially designed tank with no other inhabitants.
Thoughts so far were:
Large tank - rectangular
Get a juvenile of a small species of dolphin (I have read, some species only grow to 1.5 metres) so a juvenile might be only 60 to 80 cm size at first.
Several powerheads at one end eg. 3 or 4 Jebao RW-20's to provide a very strong flow from one end of the tank to the other for swimming/exercise.
High-capacity skimmer eg over-rated for the tank (eg. a 400 to 600 gallon rated skimmer in a 180 gallon tank) plus maybe a refuge
I am at the scoping it out and planning stage now. I have lots of experience with freshwater (kept goldfish alive for over 2 years and even bred guppies) and want to do something unique - looking at the saltwater tanks, reef tanks look beautiful but I don't know about the huge commitment of time and attention which they most obviously require. I have a 75 gallon tank which I could set up temporarily while saving up for a 180 gallon six foot tank.
If someone says do a search, I did, couldn't find any info on cetaceans on this forum. If this is the wrong forum is there an alternate place on the internet to discuss dolphin husbandry?
If it is a no go I would be willing to look at other choices but wife wants a dolphin and I want to make her happy.
