dying macro

Im not exactly sure why my macro is turning brown... but my tank just got done cycling like a week ago... could that be why? All readings are at 0. I have a flood light in there so I don't think lighting is a problem. Is there sucht hing as to much flow for macro? Cuz the chaeto is blowin all ove rthe place.

Someone please help..

tephanis,

Is Chaetomorpha the algae that is turning brown? What wattage flood light are you using? Do you test your nitrates and phosphates? If so, what are they? Perhaps your algae is nutrient limited if those are both zero. Are your pH and salinity OK? I don't think too much flow is likely the problem for chaeto.

yeaht eh chaeto and the caluerpa... funny thing is the cal grows fine as hell in my dis. The flood light I THINK it 55W or something. You know just like your normal light. My Phos are 0 and my nitrates... ehh seem like 0 ... Id on't know why they made the readings in DIFFERENT SHADES OF YELLOW... idiots. my salinity is 1.026 and hmm didn't check ph lately but it was at 8.2. I'm GUESSING it can only be the lighting because it's growing fine int he display but I mean how much light does it need? I was told macro can grow off of any light.

tephanis,

55w should be good but more might be better. I have two 45w screw-in PCs that I got from home depot lighting my chaetomorpha and it seems to be working well.

ok now the chaeto is really turning brown... I thought only some parts were turning brown but the whole thing is dying... coul dit be water conditions???

Algae need two things to grow - light and nutrients. The more light, the faster the algae grows (providing it has the nutreints it needs). All plants, including algae, will stop growing/die if either light or nutrients fall below their minimum requirements. Temp also has a limited effect here. Again all plants have a temperature range that they like. If you get too far out of that temp range they die. (FWIW I don't think temp is a problem here)

Now to your problem. I don't think 22 w bulb is enough for chaeto. I know mine did nothing with 1 of these bulbs - http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=313318 - within 6 inches of the water surface. It depends upon the wattage and how far above the surface the light is. When I added a second bulb, then the chaeto started to grow - not fast but grow. I will be installing a MH light (to use the "old" display bulbs later.

As for nutrients - even thought your test kits say 0 phosphates/nitrates/nitrites, it could be because the caluerpa in your display is using up the nutrients leaving nothing in your water column for the chaeto that you are trying to grow. The fastest growing algae will absorbe the nutrients first.

Iron could also be a limiting factor here. I don't usually recommend dosing something you haven't tested for but iron is the exception. Here is an article explaining iron and macroalgae - http://www.advancedaquarist.com/issues/aug2002/chem.htm

I would double dose iron, increase my lighting and pull out as much of the algae in the display tank (caluerpa as well as any other - slime, cyano, etc). This increase in lighting and nutrients may give the chaeto a kick start and achieve what you are looking for.

thank you very much... in my sump I saw some weird looking algae. I think it's cyano... but I'll pull out all the calur (or what I can reach), in my display. thanks!
