I have a 3 gallon Eclipse that is not in use. Could I successfully keep a small mantis in it? I also have a 58 gallon that I could donate water changes from......TIA

don't know about others here, but i've kept a really small (3.5 cm, around 1-2 inch?) mantis shrimp in a 5 gallon (with water filtration) for a year or so (until my sister poisoned it by using aerosols close to the tank).

the nice thing about it was that i could move it around easily. even place it on top of my desk and watch the mantis as it peered out at me.....

That's what I want to do.....place in on my computer desk and have him keep me company:) Did you put a piece of tubing in the sandbed for him to make a burrow or did you let him make one in the LR? I've done just a little reading so far and hope to make a nice little home for him......thanks for the reply....

With a tank that small you run a high riskof the system crashing. To keep a mantis I suggest using a 20g, but a lot of people have been successful using a 10g. It all depends on the size of the animal, how you have the tank set-up and how diligent you are with maintaining it. A 3g though...too small.

hmmm...i can't remember! i know i had a small one in a shell, but that one i note down was placed in a 10 gallon:

that above was my first mantis...quite a bit later, i got another similar sized one and that i placed in a 5 gallon hexagonal display tank that i had bought (let me check to see whether i still have it somewheres and it actually is a 5 g)....i believe i "borrowed" the idea of the first mantis and also provided a large shell for it. this one i placed on my desk first, then when i got married and was moving, i placed it temporarily in a room which my sister cleaned with some aerosols (thus killing the poor thing).

the mantis sits inside head first, with the tip of the tail "guarding" the entrance....when it is curious, it does a cute roll and peers out of the shell...it also covers up the entrance by piling small pebbels around it.

for the larger mantis, i do use tubing...

FCamdog:

yep, i have used 10 gallon to hold mantis for awhile, although my longest running tank (for a medium sized smasher and several damselfish) was a 20 g.

Thanks to all who replied. I guess I better dig up a bigger tank than my 3......I have a watchman goby and a pistol shrimp in a 10 gallon that are doing quite well. Maybe a 10 for mantis would be better.......

i found the thing, and it was 5 gallon. the thing to remember i guess is that it depends on the size of your mantis...a tiny one would look slightly ridiculous in a 20 gallon (not to mention a waste of electricity and space), but the smaller the volume of water, the more "delicate" the water conditions have to be monitored, i'd think...

i do not believe a 5 gallon would be too small for a small mantis, either. i believe dr. caldwell over in his lab uses relatively small containers to house the many mantis he has.

good luck.
