EcoTech Marine VorTech MP40 Release Information

If you haven't tried it already, you can turn the wet frame so that the part with no slots faces down. That seems to work in some cases.

My Vortechs have both slipped off their soft gaskets by about 3-4mm but one has never stopped and the problematic one hasn't stopped for over a week so if ain't broken I ain't fixing it. :p

The new Vortechs look nice though. The wet part is the les expensive side so if I buy one more unit could I have 2 new wet-frames sent out with the order?

I guess everyone just has a different application for this pump, as everyones tanks are not the same. Being able to adjust the direction of the flow would just make it more versatile for everyones application. Just a part that could be snapped on or off to suit everyones needs would be great.

jjac,

I don't see how these are any uglier then other devices in your tank. Loc-line is nothing nice to look at. THen you have regular pumps. I do not have an in wall tank and someone could look behind my tank and see the wires from the lights and the other pumps.

I'm still waiting until I see barely any tweaks needed and I'll be ordering mine.

I can see where an attachment like this will boost the pump's sales. Although I believe in the majority of cases its not needed. As long as it doesn't delay the controller coming out then why not.

Nice movie Melev. Is that with just the vortechs and not your tunze? Man, I'm lacking a TON of flow cause my tank does nothing like that.

That is with both Tunze and VorTech, but the return pump was off, IIRC. I did that movie about two months ago.

Melev, what can I say? VERY NICE!!!:D
Even my wife stopped to look at your video.

Let's keep this thread clean and on track. There's a lot of good info on the Vortech here. It's helping folks like myself understand the true purpose and effect of good water flow. I'm looking to clean up the look of my tank and replace my Seio 850 and Aqua Clear 70 with a Vortech. I'm just waiting for a stable product.

You almost lost me when the thread got side tracked on semantics. Thank you all for sharing. I'm looking forward to updates on experiences people have actually had with these pumps.

Ditto to that

WOW! I only took two days off of this thread and I missed 3 pages....

I could comment on a bunch of specific comments but I wont waste our time.

IMO (and its just my opinion based on years of physical experience with pumps and water flow, I COULD BE WRONG), a deflector will only alter the flow pattern. It MAY stop the flow from hitting certain corals, but it wont create the same flow at a 45 to the glass that you get from the pump at 90 to the glass. The entire pump would need to be angled at 45 to the glass to get the same flow. The water is not shooting straight out the front of the wet frame and being sucked in the sides. It is being "pushed" off of the propeller at approximately 140 degrees(looking fromt he top). Your getting about a 20 degree suction from the sides. And again, this is 360 degrees around the pump (looking fromt he front) and not just on one plane.

I hope that made sense. :rolleyes

If enough customers insist on a deflector then I'm sure that EcoTech will come up with something for them. I will not be buying one.

As for overall performance... I can only summarize my experience.

I replaced 4 powerheads that were easily removable from my 50 cube. 2 remain under the rocks that I didn't want to remove. Many of my large SPS colonies had begun to lose tissue at the base because of the coral growth stopping flow from the powerheads. After only a month of running the VorTechs, all the tissue loss has grown over with new growth and the tips of every coral in the tank are growing faster than before. I even have corals place in the back corner of the tank, hidden from direct flow, that are doing better now than ever before.

I am running 2 VorTechs at 90 degrees to each other in a 24x24 cube. I alternate the 2 pumps on and off.

MY TANK LOVES THEM!

if no one feels that a deflector is worth anything, then what about these pumps could be improved on to make them even more versital, besides all the bugs that need to be worked out. i only ask because from the sound of it no feels anything can be improved on these pumps. and im sure when tunze released there pumps everyone said the samething.

i believe when people quite thinking about how to change things for the better are atleast better for there application the product will go with the wind and someone else will come out with an even better pump. i for one would rather have eco tech hear every opinion and try a few to see if they work even better.

to say you would not buy o deflector is silly. you don't even know if it will make it worse are not. your only going on your assumptions. and to be that closed minded is just plain inmature

And I completely disagree with you.

The fact is, the whole reason the VorTech exists is because someone "was thinking about how to change things for the better."

You're truly beaten this topic to death, imho.

so as far as you are concerned nothing else can be done to improve this pump. if so why do you still use a have tunze?

the only thing beaten to death is the ignorence to someone elses ideas and thoughts

plus im hard headed and will continue to push this until im proven wrong, and not buy someoes thoughts about a deflector but real word test

eco tech must not think its to worthless as they have mentioned one being in development from the begining.

Chad, I do feel there are some things that could be improved upon with the pump. But most of them are trivial IMO.
1. All the "boxes" attached to the cord could be integrated into one nice package.
2. Different propellers could be offered to create different flow pattern.
3. You could run the pump in reverse.

I could keep going but all of these things would just make the pump more prone to breaking. And they really don't need that right now.

I do see the need for directing the flow (a little) in some tank applications. But I would put a lot at stake on my opinion that a deflector would not be the best solution to this. Maybe I'm not thinking of a deflector in the same way you are. Bouncing the water off of a deflector will only compress the water molecules against the deflector material and take energy away from the water. It wont reflect it like light. Totally different concept.

What will work is something that will turn the entire centerline of the pump. Something like a "wedge" system on the inside and outside frames of the pump. But this would be very hard to stabilize IMO.

I don't believe that making an educated guess based on years of experience and many college level physics classes is closed minded or immature. I think getting mad at people for having a different opinion than you have is immature.

Please explain to me how you think a deflector will not decrease the performance of these pumps and I will be glad to listen. I have given you my reasons (to the best of my ability) as to why I think the deflector will not work.

I like Melev have both Tunze and Vortech, why cant I have both?

Your opinion on the pump has been heard, your opinion on the deflector has been heard, some agree it might work, others dont feel its worth doing, so can we please drop this issue and let ecotech make the decisions on what they want to add. They follow this thread very closely and I'm sure they look at each idea with a open mind.

Let's move on guys, please..............

Boy, I am not a moderator here but all this name calling is surely not needed! Everyone has the right to their own opinions with out the accusations. We might as well start talking politics, and while were at it the abortion issue and religion and really let the sparks fly!
Tim from Eco- Tech did mention a deflector in conceptual design.
For the people who would want one, it most certainly could be sold as an accessory item. More profits for Eco- Tech and the vendors!

BTW Since we are talking propellers here, aren't the flaps and ailerons on a plane "deflectors" which direct the flow of air to cause the plane to change direction?

I think accessory propellers is worth looking into. That would be fairly easy and make a nice add-on item for Eco-Tech.
