Eggcrate on bottom of tank

I have heard it is good to use eggcrate on the bottom of the tank for a good base for rock. I have also heard you should not put eggcrate on the bottom, but I haven't heard any explanation as to why you should not.

Can anyone enlighten me?

Some people like to use it so their rocks aren't touching the bottom glass. If you want to keep creatures that live in the sand, like to bury themselves, dig, etc. then it might not be a great idea. An alternative in that case would be a sheet of plexiglass or the white cutting board material many people with BB tanks use.
I agree with Bluemorningwind though, you really don't need it.

Engineering-wise, it spreads the weight of the rocks over a large area and prevents weight from bearing down on any few points on the glass. The downside might be trapping pockets of bacteria, which, if it caused trouble for the sandbed, might require pulling it, with all attendant problems. I have eggcrate under mine: I like gobies and jawfish.
