eheim 1260 pump plumbing

how did people plumb these pumps. I haven't decided if i am going to do it externally or internally, but the connectors that came with it look like they are for flex pipe and i was going to use rigid.

You can screw in 3/4" MPT fittings. Use sched 80 since the threads are longer. Wrap it in a few winds of Teflon tape.

The thing is the threads in the Eheim are VERY CLOSE to 3/4"....but not quite. The fitting goes in slightly lose. Mine is run submerged, so I dont know if there is any seepage. Another option would be to use the O ring on the MPT fitting, but I've never tried that.

I have my 1260 running internal I have a small piece of tubing running from the pump up out of the water where it connects to my PVC return. I have the tubing extending about 2" above water level in my sump then after that it is all hard plumbed. I found this easier to do maint on because the small piece of tubing allows for small margin of error if pump is reconnected in slightly different orientation after maint on it. Also if you run it external be carefull if you hard plumb the inlet, my pumps female inlet portion cracked when I screwed in the PVC so don't over tighten it.

a barb with a hose clamp of some type usually. i use savko.com for almost all my plumbing purchases. Barbs come in many varieties to hook up to whatever you need to hook a hose up to. For instance i used spigot barbs on my last build to slide right into the 90's i was using. You can also get them to fit over a pipe like a fitting. You can get them threaded or slip. ETC ETC

hope that helps

oh..and yes you can get spa flex at HD. They had 1" here. I had to order the 1 1/2" stuff though from a spa supplier place.

You can also use a different type of PVC glue (usually blue) to glue flex PVC to standard (hard) PVC fittings. I have several of these in my plumbing. I would not use a hose barb, they restrict the flow too much.

jeffbrig, does the flex go in or outside of the standard (hard) PVC?
I'm going to have the same issue with my AGA megaflow kit because the stupid bulkheads included are also barbed (unless I replace them).

I would think using spa flex that is ridged it would be hard to get a reliable connection. Even if is water tight..if you get micro bubbles that would be the first place i would check. I am running a hammerhead (roughly 6,000 gph) with 2" lines splitting down to 1 1/2" lines on a 4way mag wave maker. Restriction of hosebarbs should not be an issue if you plumb it correctly. If your lines are too small for your pump..the restriction will already be high. If they are the right size..barb size won't restrict at all. And if you use slip(glued either spigot or regular) barbs to your fittings you will not have micro bubble problems.

If your using a small pump with regular vinyl tubing that won't see a lot of pressure in the plumbing anyway..micro bubbles aren't really an issue and you should be fine. Of course in that case barbs wouldnt' be restricting ;).

also..if you ever need to replace stuff, it is much easier to cut the hose off the barb and just pop in a new hose. I also put unions and t valves in place so that you can pop in a new pump when necessary easily. I didn't do that and i turned my t4 after a water change and nothing happened. I scrambled and put a back up pump on ..it took me rest of day. I lived with that for a week..ordered real parts from savko and a new pump while i was at it plumbed it right. Now i just have to turn off the valves undo the union ..put new pump in place and good to go. I must of drained and refilled that sump 10 times in the process of getting that replacement pump in and working. Don't even have to drain it anymore to replace the pump. Good planning prevents a lot of headaches later.

i think my plan is to just use the eheim internally so i won't have to worry about drilling the sump or the intake plumbing. for the return i'll use a small section (couple inches) of flex pvc from the eheim barbed fitting and connect that directly to rigid pvc where i can then put my union and ball valve and rest of the pvc. this will then have to connect to another small piece of flex that can then be ran into the megaflow barbed bulkhead.
thanks for the tips.

I come off the pump with a 3/4" MPT/slip -> 3/4" union-> 3/4" slip -> 3/4" Spaflex -> OM Squirt.
