enough flow?

I plan on keeping some SPS in the near future under my T5, and am wondering if I will have enough flow!

I have 2 HOB filters goign 175 GPH each, ones a fuge with cheato rubble and a light, other is carbon and rubble

1 penguin powerhead, 140 GPH

getting 1 MJ 1200, 295 GPH

soon to get CSS65, 325 GPH

175+175+140+295+325=
1065
29 = 36x turnover an hour

or I can get 2 MJ and replace the penguin, for a total of

1215
29 = 41x turnover an hour

will the 36x turnovewr be enough, or will need the extra 5 x?

I plan on keeping a green slimer frag( or more) a few easier acros, a monti cap or two, some gorgonians maybe a derasa eventually, and a brain or two, favites preferably!

the powerheads will be set up so one is in back left corner going across back of tank, other is in front right going across front to make a whirlpool!

The filters are hanging on the back right and the skimmer will go on the left, creating good flow going onto the rockscape, right now I have the one powerhead creating moderate flow on front sandbed, and along back wall, and on right tower, left tower is a little weak, would I use the powerhead to point twords the rock and bounce off the wall to creat flow there?

I think the MJ can create a good cyclone by itself!

Any opinions help!

Thanks in advance!

P.S. sorry for the essay!

Mike, I've got a 29 that's sps oriented as well that I set up in December. I have one closed loop with an ocean runner running about 900gph in addition to my mag 3 from my sump which might give me about 200-250gph. Its barely enough.

Also, consider that the css65 doesnt really count for flow because the output goes into a diffuser box to reduce bubbles which basically eliminates any flow out of the skimmer.

My opinion would be to do what some others have done and do the maxi mod to make it like a tunze. 2 of those would be all you really need.

Flow for the sake of flow is not going to help you. It has to be set up so that particles stay in suspension and make it to your skimmer. Your design is much more important that X turnover amount. I only have about 23x turnover in my tank plus a wavebox and NOTHING settles. Fish have to chase there food!

right now with the filters, theyr output goes right down to the rocks, no detrius on them, i haev flow around all sides of the tank, so i can see the occasional bubble or somethign go flying by on any side, i was thinkign of putting the penguin PH pointed across the rocks to get more flow on the left side, and make the MJ create the circle, ill play with it once i get the supplies, and get it perfedt before addign any sps, which wotn be for a while after i get the lights!

You don't really want a circular flow. You want turbulent RANDOM flow. The circle will create lots of flow, but it will be laminar flow (from the perspective of a singe coral in the tank. Usually the best way to setup powerheads (unless you have a sea-swirl, wavebox, or other wackiness) is to take two or more powerheads, put them on opposite ends of the tank, and point them at each other. The flow will collide creating very turbulent random flow near where they meet, and pretty turbulent flow elsewhere (aside from right in front of each powerhead - that will be laminar).

cool!

thansk alot kroe!

i can move one powerhead to collide with the filters output, i had that before!

then i can mayube put he other one to creat good flow in random places by bouncing off somethign!
