Enough Light?

I've got a 55 gall, about 15" tall w/ a 250W MH and 2 VHO's, I think this will be enough for a clam but I may end up getting rid of my MH. So will 4 110 watt VHO's be enough for a clam? Possibly for a squamosa but how about maxima or crocea? Thanks.

If you keep the halide, then you would be fine with a crocea or maxima under the halide. If you convert to all VHO, then a squamosa would definitely be fine and maybe a maxima up in the rock work. I have had a gold maxima under 740 watts of vho over my 125 for a few months now and he has shown some good growth...JMO

Thanks for the reply. Do you have any SPS under that light as well? My MH is becoming a pain for me.

What?!?
MH Is by FAR the best lighting you can have for a reef tank.
Why would you even make such a statement?

What do you mean that it is becoming "a pain" to you?
Many animals we keep in our tank require intense lighting to survive and thrive.
Sun type intense.
MH is the closest thing we have to that.
VHO's just don't give that type of intensity.
Can you keep many of these creatures with VHO's? Sure you can.
Would MH be better? Sure it would.

Why is it a pain? I live in AZ and in the summer, it gets HOT!!!!! Tank temp is a big issue for me. I have 3 fans in under the hood and it's now maintaining the temp at 80-82 during the day w/ the MH on for about 6.5 hours. But it's only been in the high 70's and lower 80's. When it gets in the triple digits, my AC maintains a 80 room temp. The canopy is not custom so the MH is way too close to the water. It's about 3.5 inches away. So there's a problem. I've been looking into getting a canopy built to raise it but that's really expensive. Been playing around with the idea of DIY but it would be hard to match the finish. A chiller is way out of my budget right now. But I do love the way the light casts a shadow on the water making the water ripples.
