Explosive Algae growth...

Hey everyone, just wondering if anyone knows what kind of algae looks like a dusting of cinnamon. Sorry for the lack of pics as I don't have a digital cam... But it literaly does look like a sprinkling of a fine dark red/brown powder. It is showing up in patches on the substrate and LR. It doesn't look that ugly YET, but it is growing at an alarming rate... Should I be concerned? Is this beneficial algae? Any insight would be appreciated! FYI... The tank's substraight/rocks were in my previous tank and I've just upgraded tanks only about 10 days ago so the water is near pristene... no amonia or nitrites and nitrates are very low (about 10-15ppm) no phosphates either in the water... thanks.

How long has the tank been set up? Usually algae that looks like dust and brownish in color, is not algae at all but are diatoms. Diatoms usually crop up fast in newer setups and usually recede and go away on their own after the food source is used up and the tank stabalizes more. Diatoms feed primarily on silicates in the water. If the current tank setup is a few months old or less and what your tank has is diatoms, just keep up on the water changes and maintenance and stock up on the snails which will help and things should clear up on its own. Good luck

As said above, I would wait and see how things stabilze out. I wouldn't jump to chemical treatment as the first step.

thanks for your responses... Please elaborate.. What in almighty's name is a diatome? I'll leave it alone for now, I have a UV sterilizer that I'm not using right now... Would hooking it up help?
