exposure well, kinda

I am having touble getting balanced pics of my tank. I will assume due to the intense lighting, I am getting over exposure on the top of the rocks and under exposure below.

Are others getting this problem, and how are you correcting it?....External lighting?

The second pic, is getting better....but usually a lot hotter with over/under exposure problems.
