Faux sandbed + Jawhead Home looking for Ideas....

Im currently setting up a 125g and have chosen to go with the faux sandbed. Well, the front 4-5 inches will be all sand. The wife wants a jawhead or 2, so I am left with the task of keeping her happy so that I can continue with my tank.
I figure i can set a piece of PVC in the mix easy enough for a home but a few questions come to mind. What size PVC to use? Should the bottom end be caped? How deep should it go? What angle? Will the little guy{s} use them or will they just take up a home in the rockwork?
Does anyone out there have any info on this setup or its success rate?

first off, what do you mean by the front 4-5 will be sand? if theres sand in the tank its going to spread all over if thats the case.

And the jawfish likes to dig. I dont think just pvc would make him happy.
