After searching for weeks, I got my first mantis shrimp today. She is a beauty. She is bright green with purple meral spots and is about 3 inches long. The place where I got her acquired her by accident in some live rock. He kept her in a fish bowl and fed her minnows and silversides. I do not know what silversides are. I live in the midwest and we don't get feeder saltwater fish. I thought about feeding her feeder rosie barbs which are readily accessible, but they died before she got to them. How do I know when to feed her? He said he fed her when he remembered to. Will she come out so I know to throw the live fish in or do I throw them in and hope she gets to them? The freshwater fish surely will die so before she could get to them. I have also added a few snails in case she is a smasher. Can anyone tell me how to go about feeding her and how often to do so. Thanks!!!

i stick 1/2 a frozen shrimp on a bamboo skewer about 3 times a week for my 3". i've been looking for small live clams at the supermarket but mine doesn't carry anything smaller than my fist.
sometimes i throw in a crayfish when i feel like catching one (i have a stream in my front yard).

It sounds like a G. Smithi.Can you get hermit crabs?You should feed it atleast one a week.At that size you should find hermits 1" long.
