feeding

how do I go about feeding LPS? I was thinking about maybe just putting fish eggs in the tank and wherever they land the corals would get to eat them. then the fish, snails, and shrimp could eat the rest of them.

Use a Turkey Baster and spot feed everything. Whatever gets away from thew coral and into the flow of the tank the fish will eat. That's how I have been doing it and it works great.

Is there a "best" time of day to do this? I notice that my Australian maze only extends it tentacles at lights-out.

I make a point of regularly spot feeding my LPS about an hour or so after lights out. It's a little more difficult while holding a flashlight, but it's also the only way I can feed some of my corals. I use a long piece of rigid airline tubing connected to a syringe by a small piece of flexible airline tubing. Makes it very easy to put the food exactly where you want it.

i have got mine to open before lights out now to exept food i switch the halide off nd turn on actinics and they open

I try to feed my LPS every other night. A couple of them that open during the day get fed almost every day. I was looking at some pictures recently and noticed that my Turbinaria peltata has grown much faster since I started feeding it daily.

Many lps respond at night to feeding. For example, brain corals, sun corals, etc open up or let their feeding tentacles out at night so you will have better success trying to feed them at night.

Other corals like dendros, rhizos, balanos, and fungias, doesn't really matter. They are open up all day so you can feed at night or day.

Do you have to feed lps? Yes and No. Non photosynthetic lps corals like sun corals need to be fed. Other corals like fungias, candy canes, and maze brains....not really. They are photosynthetic so they can get a lot of their energy from that.......however, they will eat food and feeding them can make they grow faster.

For me, any lps I have that have a mouth and feeder tentacles, I just spot feed every other day. Be careful about water quality.
