Filter usage

I need some advice on how to use a polarizing filter, The camera shop that I got my D70 from sold me a u.v. filter to protect my lens and I also got a polarizing filter to use. He told me to just leave on the u.v. filter and screw the polarizing filter onto it,,, is shooting through both going to cause any problems or should I just use one or the other at a time? I am going to to the drag races in the morning and want to use the polarizing filter.......... any help is greatly appreciated since I am definately a camera newbie... :)

Thanks,
Tom

the polarized one, is that the one that is coated and costs like $40? I hear they're supposed to really improve quality.

By stacking filters, you tend to get a little more flares, however it is not huge issue. As with any filters you purchase, make sure you get the coated one, the price difference is large, but so is the optical difference.

Uncoated filters will be cheap as dirt, while coated ones will be around $40-50 each even for a UV filter. I use a UV filter on my 70-200 and macro lens because I usually wipe them with my shirt, and having a "cheaper" filter allows me to do this. I use Hoya's Pro1 series, but their Super Multicoated are also very good. Some people will argue why put a $50 filter in front of a $1600 lens, well each to their own, but I don't measurebate over my photos at 300% zoom, I can't tell the difference :D :D

The polarising filter would be good for drag races to reduce glare, but remember, it's sensitive to the direction of the light. In addition, they typically cut 2-stops of light, so you need to decide whether that's appropriate. You can jsut decide that once you get there and fire a few test shots.

Anyhow, have fun! Hope this helps you a little.

Louis,
Thanks for the info, Boy this photography stuff is kicking my butt and making me think that maybe I should have started another tank with all this dough.....;) but I am too hard headed and do not give up easily enough some say. I took just a little over 300 shots today and maybe just maybe 1/3 of them are sorta keepers. I had alot of them with the polarizer turn out way too dark. For others I have learned when old and shaky that my next zoom it will have to be a VR lens :( since I must have the weebly wobblies.... Here is a few of the ones that I am not totally ashamed to show

god I love the pro-mods....nice photo! I could stand and watch them launch all day. I used to spend a lot of time at the Darlington track. It's been alomst 10 years.... time to go back to the drag races.

The pics look cool.

You should notice no difference stacking a UV with a polarizer.

1/3 of the shots turning out well is a good number. My camera pays for my tanks and honestly I like about 1 out of a couple of hundred shots.

I miss the drag races...the jet cars and methane funny cars the most, man I need to go back! Those are some very nice shots!!

I don't personally use UV filters. You can stack UV and the polarizer, but on wider lenses, it may cause vignetting. Also, keep in mind, everything you put in front of your lense will degrade the end image quality to some degree.
