Filtered sea water for water changes?

There is a Fisheries reasearch facility about an hour from where I live and it's a joy looking at the various tanks they have. I have become friends with some of the staff and I found out that they use filtered sea water to the changes the water in their tanks.

I told them that I was doing some research towards setting up my own reef tank. They told me that if I ever needed filtered sea water, they would be happy to provide it.

Will using filtered sea water as water change be a good idea?

It all depends on how the water is filtered and to what extent. Do they test the water after it is filtered?

As long as you have a clean water source away from rivers and water treatment facilities. The last hour of a rising tide usually is the cleanest water to use.

I will ask around to what extent they filter the water. As far as I could tell, they run it through this tower (about the 4 stories high) to filter the water. The tower looks a bit antiquated, but it still works.

Thanks!
