Fire Worms!

Big Blue

A few nights ago I was looking into my tank admiring my 1.25'' maxima. He was doing very well in my tank and I had him for three weeks. When I went to look at him the next morning he was completely gutted! I couldn't believe my eyes and I was really quite stumped as to what happened. That same night I shined a flashlight into my tank and spotted a large fire worm, 4"+, on the same rock that I had my clam. With further investigation I have since found several of these worms in my tank. If I was to guess, it was one of those worms that ate my clam. They look like big red catipillers with fuzzy legs. Has anyone else had this experience and what can I do about the worms. I would like to get another clam but not before I get rid of them.

It is very unlikely that the worm killed your clam. The clam was probably already dead or dying; the worm was probably just cleaning up. Clams usually don't show extravagant signs of decline; they are good one day, and gone the next, often. Clams can appear just fine right up to the moment they actually die.
