First clam!

FAT 5" T. squamosa. He looks like he couldn't get any longer so he grew upwards and outwards instead! He is a caramel color with greenish white markings.

Oh couple of quick questions , should I place his byssal opening or his hinge on the substrate (dumb question I know, but I did all my research into caring for these animals, and just completely missed anytihng about which parts goes on bottom)? Should I put a flat piece of rock under him as well to help for stability? Someone said it helps against parasites as well. I am unsure on this one still and ask for opinions because if I have to move him I don't want to stress him out by having a rock attached, even if it is not heavy.
What defines gaping? His exhalant siphon is open rather wide, but he reacts extremely well to all simuli and I've read that diagnosing "gaping" can be extremely difficult.

I'm very happy with my clam and with the service I got from Barry at clamsdirect.com!

I place a flat rock about 1/2 " under the sand so when he tries to dig he will come in contact with the rock and not go any further.

Most of the clams that I have bought gap a little for a day or so then they close up.

Getting my new clam from Clams Direct on Friday. :) Can't wait.

Which one are you getting?

I've been waiting for 6 weeks to get the clam book by Knopp and it hasn't come in yet. Amazon.com said they'd sent it and have no idea what is going on. I'm sure it would answer all the non-critical questions I have, but I'm not spending $50 on a second copy. Grr
