Fish feeding with hikari mysis

I currently feed my anthias with a mixture of hikari and PE mysis. However, hikari mysis seems no longer to be available in the 40 oz flat packs. Anyone recommend an equivalent mysis available in large packages (it is less expensive that way. (By the way, I also feed other stuff such as Nutramar Ova, cyclopeeze, etc, so I am not looking for alternative foods but would consider such if you have ideas).

Wow I didn't even know they made a 40oz flat pack. I tried the H20 1kg pack, but the mysis were mostly in pieces with very few intact.

I am lucky in that regard. Her only passion in my aquaria is mandarins and she is tolerant of other fish and critters. Not so big on my keeping and feeding blackworms but otherwise very tolerant. I am very lucky with respect to having her in my life.

WOW! That is a huge thing of Mysis. I personally have tried a bunch of different brands for Mysis, but think it is worth the few extra dollars for the PE mysis because they actually come almost all full bodied compared to almost all other brands where they are all chopped up. They seem to be more oily and nutritious imo as well.

I try to keep at most 6 months worth in the freezer, obviously the fresher the better, but I would say a year absolute tops.

How do you find the quality of this product? The protein content of their mysis is dwarfed by the moisture content (for the frozen). The freeze dried option will have a longer life than typical frozen food right?

Do you get a comparable feeding response with the freeze dried to standard frozen fare?

Looks like they offer 5.5lbs of frozen(never freeze dried) Mysis relicta for $30. But this is comparable to PE Mysis not Hikari.

i've never tried any of it, but if you follow that thread, a lot of folks from the jersey area is real happy with it. shipping for them is only around 10 bucks.

the high shipping cost for me(south louisiana) would negate any price advantage of buying in bulk.

One is fresh water mysis and another one is saltwater mysis. Nutrition contents will be different.

Different fish like different things. Leopards as an example love PE mysis. I mix feed PE and Hikari for my anthias.

Exactly. I try to provide different foods at different times of the day for a variety of nutritional content.

There is the benefit of varying the nutrition as others have mentioned in addition to the noticeable size difference. PE is much larger that Hikari mysis. Some reef fishes (usually the small mouthed ones) tend to favor Hikari in my opinion primarily because of it's size. Their mysis also do not have as substantial of a chitin exoskeleton as the Mysis relicta that PE and other companies offer. At times the thick exoskeleton can limit a fishes ability to fully ingest the mysis.

Personally, I don't bother varying the mysis types because I think that PE's product is far superior. Most fishes will learn to accept it even if they don't initially. I like to dice PE while frozen if the fishes I'm feeding can't handle the full sized mysis.

Just my thoughts on the matter..:crazy1:
