There is nothing wrong with halogen bulbs on a reef. Other than asthetics. And other than efficiency. Oh yeah and other than the wrong spectrum for corals.

What kind of advise it that. Nothing worng with it, well except that it doesn't work good.

:) A little sarcastic humor never hurt anyone.

actually your right they are transformers, I should have been more specific, but my point was that halogens are very different from incandescent bulbs.

Really?

Here is a quote from this website: http://members.misty.com/don/bulb1.html

"Halogen Bulbs
The halogen cycle, What are halogen bulbs?
A halogen bulb is an ordinary incandescent bulb, with a few modifications. The fill gas includes traces of a halogen, often but not necessarily iodine. The purpose of this halogen is to return evaporated tungsten to the filament."

Well I do I have MH in my reef, not that im going to switch to Halogens. I just feel like conductiong a little experiment Halogen vs. Metal Halide. But I'm going to find out the hands on way, why Zoos, or Shrooms cant thrive under Halogen in the same type of water. 1 poylp under a halogen and 1 poylp under a halide

I was thinking of starting up a tank for my Uncle who seems very interested but doesnt like the fact that he has to pay $200 for a special light. So I was thinking of fixing up some sort of cheap effiecient lighting. So I wanted to try it out my self.

You seem pretty determined about this. Hey more power to you. Everything I've read says it's not the best light for coral growth. But what do I know. If no one ever questioned the status quo the earth would still be the center of the universe. Right?

Make sure you post your results! I would love to see them. It's not a perfectly controlled experiement, so will need to take lots of pictures if you want to make believers out of anyone else.

Good luck!

Go ahead. But you're wating your money, or your uncles money. If it worked, everyone would be doing it. It's one of the most inefficient lighting systems out there. Not to mention it looks terrible.
