Floor covering under tank stand?

I have wall to wall carpeting in the room that my tanks are in, but I have ceramic tile put down under all of my tanks. Leave a foot of tile in front of and on the other sides the tank in case of spillage during maintenance. Linoleum ar that kind of flooring would also work.

I should have clarified...I'm actually putting the tank on hardwood floors...Any need to put something down?

Ahhh...hardwood floors, huh? Living dangerously, I guess, aren't you? Well, I may be messier than others, but I doubt it. So, I'm not sure what, but I'd recommend that you put something down between the tank-stand and the nice flooring you'll have in the room. Just getting saltwater on the hardwood floors and not drying it perfectly, which is largely impossible because some would get between the stand and the floor under it, will lead to a fairly quick degeneration of the finish on the wood...even if it's got a good coat of polyurethane on it.

Avi, is there something bad about putting tanks on hardwood floors that I don't know about..."living dangerously?"

Nope I have mine on my hardwood floor works just fine. It is important to keep the floor dry. Make sure you dont make a mess when doing water changes and maintenance. If you do saltwater of course is harmful to hardwood floors just make sure you wipe it up asap. Oh and I put a nice layer of wax on the floor around my tank every other week or so, I do not recommend puting anything under your tank i is possible it will actually trap water under your tank.

I personally didn't bother with anything between the stand and hardwoods. I've always had my SW tanks on hardwood floors w/ no issues. If I'm doing something potentially messy like a water change I just toss some towels down on the floor in front of it and they catch and spills before they're able to seep under the stand and create havoc on the finish. Now if your system isn't foolproof and could possibly overflow in any way then you're talking another story...

ask my wife...she'll tell you!

I had a 24 gallon nano split top-to-bottom, I'm now pulling down wet sheet-rock in the AM.

well...there ya go...some personal testimonials. I guess, the more precautions the better, like with anything else.

So the stand split? I'm thinkin' you would have cleanup even if you had something under the stand...

af, I think the thing you'd need to be most concerned about is water spilling while you do waterchanges and other maintenance. If it spills right at the base of the stand, water may unavoidably get under the stand where it's difficult to get to, to dry it. If this happens enough, and without really vigilant efforts on your part, it may, then after a time the finish on the wood floor right where the stand it would degenerate and discolor. This may happen over a long time but that's what most likely would be your biggest downside.

I have all my tanks on hard wood floors for the only carpet in the house is a 1" plus thick carpet around the bed for I more then a year ago did surgery on one my cats that she had to have a medal supports for she had an accident in which broken her bones at her elbow and is why I the carpet around the bed because the bed is a very high (king size).

I did thought when moving that first my eel tanks were moved into the new house and I thought up the idea of glass or heavy duty plastic, but then again the floor needs to breath and I had decided against the idea of having anything under the tank stands.
Just you need to do is make sure that your sump isn't over full so that if and when a power outage happens that then your sump wouldn't overflow onto your floor.

I no problems in keeping my floor area around the tanks stain free, spot free that is :D

I used silicone caulk to adhere shower pan liner to a hard wood floor :). You can let it roll up the wall a little to protect the sheetrock.

Have mine on a hardwood floor, and nothing under. I wouldn't recommend it either, might trap water. My floors are beveled, so the stand isn't completely flush. Other than a flood, just be careful during water changes, etc. Keep towels around, and I have the compressed air in a can in my stand too, just in case I spill a little, and it goes under the stand. I can blow out whatever little spill comes too close to going under, they really come in handy.
