so last night i was doing some tank matinance and wasn't paying close attention to what i was doing when all of a sudden my hand started to feel like it was on fire . i had touched my frogspawn with a small cut on my finger. i ran to the sink and washed with soap and rinsed with water until it stoped burning . i thaught i was fine untill i woke up in the middl of the night in pain. my finger had swollen up and is very tender now. i'm sure i'll be fine but i cant move my finger much right now without it hurting badly. any one ever have something similar happen to them? if so how long did it take for the swelling to go down?

I've been stung by hammer coral before. The only time I felt it was when I had a cut. I only brushed up against the hammer very slightly and didn't get any swelling.

When I first set up my tank and had my hands in the water a long time arranging the rock the way I wanted it I ended up with a burning rash that lasted over a month and once I got nailed by a bristleworm so I don't do anything in my tank anymore without wearing gloves.

When something like this happens you should try using distilled white vinegar to neutralize the sting.. soap and water usually doesnt cut it :(

If you only have swelling and its a) not getting worse b) getting better c)you have no other symptoms i'd say you're okay.. Maybe put neosporin on the cut

If for any reason you feel bad.. hard to breathe, dizzy etc go see a doctor and have them check you out. It is very possible to have allergies to corals.. Gloves are always recommended (yet rarely used for the 2 seconds to adjust something in a tank)

I have an allergy to mushroom slime and my finger is awful looking from lots of exposure handling them but its strictly a site skin allergy fortunately

thats good info thanks. the swelling is almost gone now so no big deal but i'll definatly be more carefull in the future.

I have a Hammer that burns soft skin like the inside of my arm-- looks like a poison ivy type rash. Still not as bad as the stinging black sponge that grows in my Zoa garden. I have to make a glove from a sandwich bag to prune it out. Feels like a billion burning needles.

I wonder if it's species specific or if some are simply unaffected by them. None of my Euphyllia have ever stung me and I've brushed up against them.

if you're feeling "experimental," let the tentacles brush against the inside of your arm for a few seconds. It doesn't feel like anything at the time, but the rash usually develops a couple hours later.

I think it's because our hands have tough skin and usually they can't sting through it. Sensitive areas like the inside of your arm can get stung easily. I've had a sting from my anemone really hurt inside my arm but I could toss it between my hands all day worry free :)

I've been stung a couple of times by my Euphyllia.I'm not sure which species-I have all 5 grouped together on one side of the tank.My reaction was no where near as bad as yours.Mine stung and burned, but the pain was minor and only lasted a few hours.

I've touched frogspawn, torch and hammer with my hands and arms many times.. Never felt any sort of sting... Always have some white gunk left where they have touched though..

I've been stung multiple times by frogspawns in sensitive areas and areas with broken skin. That and room are the main reasons I got rid of my large pieces.

This would freak me out a bit. I'd have to be confident that it was not a sign that in any way my skin was melting off my arm.

on the other hand its still pretty gross. ;p
