I will be transfering my current 40 breeder SPS tank to a 100 gallon cube, right now i run a fuge in my sump, but i want to keep my the cube as simple as possible, so what do you guys think, fuge or no fuge?

you really dont need one for a beatiful tank, BUt it is nice to have since you can hide equipment there, you can grow macroalgae, pods, keep frags, add additives, etc

sana

I depends on if you are going to dose Vodka IMO. I had a fuge for the longest time, then after about a year of carbon dosing, my macro algae won't grow anymore. The Cheato totally fizzled out. I have the tiniest amount of Caulerpa still, but very little and it barely grows. I still keep it only for the SSB down there. I'm sure it helps with NO3 a little at least. So I haven't torn it out. But when I upgrade I don't think I am going to add a fuge. I think that carbon dosing is more affective. Granted you don't get the bio- diversity that a fuge gives you. I always had tons of pods and stuff in there, but I look at my DT at night and there is still a ton of pods in there.

I currently do not run a fuge but I am setting one up for my upgrade. It can't hurt any since they take out bad stuff. Just find a way to use some sump space for a small fuge, even if it's small

on my new tank i chose to make a frag tank section of the sump instead of a fuge... lol somehow i still ended up throwing in a piece of chaeto! :p

A fuge takes up a lot of space...vodka takes up none! I agree with luther about the benefits of biodiversity with a fuge though.

I vote for the fuge also. Actually at the time, my fuges are about 1.5 times the volume of the DT. I dose Vodka also and it seems to working very well together. You can't grow pods and all the other micro fauna with Vodka, but I think a lower dose of it along with is going to be what works for my tank.

I don´t like fuge, it´s a great place to decant detritus

I don´t have po4 and no3, just a good skimmer and regular water changes

I like the idea of keep things as simple as possible

Best Regards

I just siphon the detritus during water changes.

No fuge. Just a sump with an oversized skimmer is all you need like Denadia said. A fuge is most likely going to trap more nutrients than it is going to export. Plus you will save energy not having to light a fuge. Good luck.

No fuge, no vodka either :) Just a large skimmer, lots of flow, BB in my case and 5% weekly water change. I've always run a fuge and it was a pita to keep clean. Why add more maintenance? It is, however, great for biodiversity.

If you have problems keeping nitrates and phophates under control a fuge might help. I haven't had one in over 10 years and have no nutrient problems

My next tank... no fuge. People say you need them for pods etc or a dsb for nitrates.. I don't buy it. My old fuge trapped more gunk than anything else.

I am going to to be doing the following with my next build:

bare bottom display, clean sump with 24/7 filter socks, lots of LR, tons of flow, good skimmer

You really shouldn't need anything else to keep it under control. All that gunk that gets stuck in the fuge is just going to build trates, whether you siphon is weekly or biweekly its still not getting removed like it would with filter socks.

Even the sand bed in my current display seems to collect detritus. Run huge flow, a clean tank, keep everything in the water column and change filter socks religously and you'll have a spotless tank. Big skimmer for the doc's that do manage to dissolve. WC's of course.
