Getting familiar with my new Rebel and would like opinions.

Thanks 30gal. I am trying to sharpen up my camera skills so all feedback both good and bad are welcome.

The effort looks real good to me....I've always had trouble tryin' to get that type of shot. Yours looks as good as most I've seen.

Thanks for the compliments. The camera is still new to me and there are many things I don't know how to do yet and cropping is one of em.

I was thinking I'd like my tank better if the background was black so I scraped off the coralin and took another shot.

They both look awesome. This is a really tough kind of shot because of the massive amount of contrast- it's pretty much impossible to get it perfect because the bright sand and dark caves are too much of an exposure range- it's got to be something like 6-8 stops and our poor cameras, even the best of them, can't handle that. You made just about the best compromise I think.

Thanks Charles....

My G/F came home the other night and wanted to know what I did different with the tank. She said it looks 10X better.

It looks awesome! I have a Rebel, as well... but eversince we switched from 12k lighting to 10k's, full tank shots aren't nearly as attractive! lol

We also keep the coraline scraped. A much clearner look!

Good job! :D

Thanks for the compliments folks. Water bug do you have any actinic supp? It took me a while to get the white balance corrected. On auto WB the pics were comming out pinkish.

Looks good. I'd just crop it so you just see the tank.

You can get WB adjusted pretty well by doing it manually with a coffee filter over the lens.

Never tried the coffee filter. Have used a piece of white plastic inside of the tank, photographed that, then set that to the custom White Balance.

Whne I had the Nikon D1X it was easier because I could just put in the color temperature of the bulbs.

Shooting Raw files are also easier because you can adjust the WB on the computer after you shoot it.

Setting your parameters to Parameters2 will make the pictures look more true to life instead of saturated and contrasty, but some people like the look of parameters 1

BTW the tank looks great.

Thanks everyone for the compliments. I remember seeing a thread on W.B. using the coffee filter but never read it. The camera is still pretty new to me and learning as I go. White balance is tricky I've learned.

Do I need special software to crop the photo? I do not have photoshop yet but plan on getting it soon.

Once again thanks for all the help and keep the comments coming.
