Polyp Nipper
So, I was cleaning my Tunze wave box last night. While putting it back into the tank I held it with one hand and reached down to grab one of the outside magnet mounts (seen below).
As I did this, it was sitting too close to the other outside magnet mount. They snapped together like a bear trap. While the magnets are together, the plastic frame on the inside leaves a small gap. The gap is much narrower then my pinky finger, well my fully inflated pinky finger that is and unfortunately I found that out the hard way.
So, my pinky was trapped and getting crushed. I desperately tried to separate the magnets which is nearly impossible with two free hands, let alone when one has its pinky getting crushed. My wife was not far away so I yelped for her to come help me. She came rushing over but had no clue what was going on. So I explained what was happening in quick short breaths. She rushed over but unfortunately she was unable to separate them. She kept apologizing saying "I'm sorry but I am not strong enough".
At this point my body's natural response was to start sweating profusely, I am even starting to sweat recounting the event. I then went into our utility room to and told my wife to open tool box. We tried to pry it apart with screw driver but couldn't get that to work. Finally I had her take a pair of needle nose pliers wedge it in next to my finger and open it, allowing my pinky to escape.
Now if it didn't feel so good just to lay on the floor with my hand in the air I would have taken a picture of my indented pinky right there and then. It took about 20 mins for blood to return and re-inflate it. Alas, all I have is this picture from today which is much less impressive.
Kinda swollen and numb today.
So the moral of the story is to heed the warnings on rare earth metal magnets.
