Sorry to revive this -- in fact, you don't know how sorry I am. If you read the previous thread from last week on Gaping clams, you'll see I lost a large T. Squamosa. I wasn't sure of the final cause of its demise, but suspect the attentions of a trigger fish, combined with predatory rice-snails, did it in.
Well, tonight I came home to find my smaller T. squamosa dead as well. I've had this clam for about six months. Last night I noticed it was looking poorly -- shades of last week with the other squamosa -- so I inspected it for rice snails or bite marks from the trigger. Negative on both, though I have seen rice snails elsewherre in the tank.
My questions are number one, what should I do to protect the T. maxima in the tank, which I've had for over a year. I've inspected it for rice snails, but haven't found any so far. Second question is, if this is predatory snails that are killing my clams, what can I do to cure this beside sixline wrase and constant inspection of the clam? Am I at risk of having my tank permantly "infected" by these little devils? Third (and final) question is, if not predatory rice snails, what else might be causing the deaths of my squamosa (aside from water quality issues, of course. Water parameters, which have stayed stable for sometime, are unchanged in recent months)?
Thanks for any help/advice.
