Gaping

It's a sign of poor health....bad water conditions, insufficient lighting, etc.

Is your clam gaping? What are your water params? Lighting?

Tank is 72g set up for 1 year and 3 mos - 2 x 250W 10K MH's and 2 x 120W actinics (03's).

Sorry - don't have the params handy (haven't checked in a while since everything appears to be thriving - really should do a check today just to make sure everything's fine!)

I just added the clam this week actually. Picked him up Tuesday night. I have no idea if he's gaping or not. He definitely reacts to movement and shadows. It's just that the hole seems so big to me. And maybe it's normal? First clam for me, so of maybe I'm being a bit "over-anxious"?

Here's a pic... can anybody tell from pic if he looks ok?

Thanks! :)

Crocea, right? Then you probably don't have to worry :) I've heard that they keep the incurrent syphon open much more than the other clams. Your lighting is obviously fine, so he might just be still getting used to your tank.

I am not expert, but IME, when I first got my crocea, it was just like that, I thought mine is unhealthy at that time, but after a week or 2, when it start to settle down, the gapping is less and less, from what I have read, when the clam is under stress or change in environment, it tends to gape, and after a while, it will be less and less, good luck

Thanks for all the feedback! It's VERY much appreciated, believe me!!! :D

By the way - yes, it is a crocea. ;) :D
