garage sump

Does any one have their tank drain into a sump in the garage? I would like to do this since my new house has a garage and I am sick of overflowing the sump onto the carpet. Yeah, I have done it at least 3 times. I wanted to know if there are any major heat problems doing this during the summer months. I will not have the cash to get a chiller so I might have to stick to flooding the living room floor. If you have experience in this area please let me know how your system reacts to the sump in the garage.

Thanks for any imput.

its just plumbing right? gravity drain...pump return. imagine you will get some resistence on the distance of the return. still basic.

my garage is one of the coolest "rooms" in the house in the summer...

I'd be more concerned about car exhaust fumes. but with adqeuate ventilation, that should be a non-issue..

Nagel,
Car? In a garage? Who does that? Just kidding. I doubt the car will be sharing the garage, but seriously. How does it stay cool? I just figured no AC it would be really hot in there.

Maxpower. It will be gravity drain and pump return. It will be a long distance though. I hope my current pump will handle it. We will see.

My guess is the concrete floor keeps it cool... I don't open the doors much, nor the windows.. Its cool like my basement... Mind you, the basement is definately a floor below (not beside like some bi-levels)..

royy - I run a sump in my basement, so I guess I have a bit of experience
with remote sumps. My first concern would be fumes from cars, but as you mentioned, you won't have any cars, so that's cool. Second would be heat in the summer and cold in the winter. Most people don't think about the later because heaters are cheap. I don't know how much water volume we're talking about, but in an extreme cold situation (like our winters), you'd need several heaters running almost constantly, if you have a lot of water, you're talking 500-700 watts easy. You'd notice that on your electric bills. For heat, I'm not sure about this one. If your garage gets outside hot (90+), then I'd say there's a good chance you'd have heat problems. Blowing a fan over a sump is typically good for a few degree drop. If your garage is insulated well, it might be possible. My garage, for example, is VERY hot in the summer and I would highly doubt that I'd be able to run in the summer with a sump in my garage sans chiller. My last concern would be dirt. Again, depending on how well your garage is insulated. Even in my basement I get a lot of bugs and crap floating in my sump that I have to net out.

A friend of mine has his sump in the garage...it works just as efficent as any other sump....but he has 3 heaters in the sump idk why, but my guess is just incase one dies...your whole tank doesn't go down with it b/c of the temp

dont forget about winter i know my garage gets real cold.
the insulation helps.

sry for steal the threat but how you insulate a sump??? because i will love to set up a big sistem one day??

reviving the dead, but how is everyone's garage sump doing? I am considering moving mine out there.

I currenlty have a mag 9.5 for a return. With this project I would have about 30-40 horizontal feet and about 4 vertical feet. Would I need a more powerful pump? If so, how about some recomendations?
