GE Silicone

I know there have been countless threads on this, but nothing I put in the search engine comes up with this.

So I just built a 20L sump, and I used GE silicone, however it wasnt the one for doors it was for siding and trim. I didn't see anything on it that said it was mold resistant like the others. Does anyone know if this one is ok?

What was the smell? vinaigar or ammonia?

more like vinegar

actually, I just rechecked that.

As I set it up, it smelt like vinegar, but as it is curing is smells like both ammonia and vinegar

use to be the ge silicon ll was ok and silicon l wqas not now all the new bio resistant ones are all not safe it will say right on the back not safe for....... walmart does carry in the fish department aqaurium silicon though hope this helps

The only problem with that T-bone is that they all say not safe for aquariums. Its a blanket statement to cover themselves If I decided to make a 500 gallon aquarium using only their silicone.

So I still don't know if its good or bad that it has an ammonia smell to it while its curing

now they do because they all have the bio safe logo on it meaning that there is an addition the the product which was not there before silicon two use to be ok and silicon one wasnt and I dont know about the smell either good luck

This one doesn't have the bio safe logo on it either. So im still trying to figure out what to do. I really don't want to have to scrape it all off and start over. But if I have to....

Personnaly I would start over, but you could risk it.
Look safe, but who knows?

What would happen if I did use this silicone and it did have anti-bacterials in it? Would I kill off my LR or anything living in my tank?

And IceFire, what is the diff if the silicone smells like vinegar or ammonia while curing?

Someone has to know the answer to this. I have the sump/fuge all built and ready to go, I don't want to put it in service if its gonna kill my tank or LR or anything!

If you are not sure I would scrape it off and start over

If you look on the MSDS there is no mention of any anti-mildew/mold agents. It should be fine for aquariums. The ingredients are either types of silicone or help in the bonding process for different surfaces. I would feel comfortable using it. You could always fill it with water and airate the water for a while, rinse and repeat, possibly even use some bleach solution. I don't know how long it would take to break down any thing harmful, but it would be better than nothing.

well now since it freaked me out, I started to strip the old silicone and bought GE I silicone for doors and windows at Walmart, it had no mention of Bio seal or any anti-bacterial/fungal. So Thats my plan for now. Thanks for the help guys!
