Getting in close help/tips

I have a Olympus D-390 2.0 Megapixel digital zoom. AF 5mm 1:2.8 lens. Having probs zooming in as pics are blurred. Will a tripod help? Do I need an expensive camera for good pics?

A tripod always helps :p
Unfortunately that camera has a fixed focal length lens- no zooming. It does have digital zoom but using digital zoom always makes the picture quality go down- usually way down.
To get the best close-ups the camera is capable of you'll want to get the lens 8" away from the subject- no closer than that-- and the camera has to be in macro mode (usually noted by a flower icon). A tripod will help a lot, and you'll want to limit yourself to subjects that aren't moving, or are moving very little, unless you use the flash. Try focusing first- point the camera at your subject, then press the shutter button halfway and hold it there until you're sure the autofocus is locked on- then gently press the button the rest of the way. You could try using the self-timer to steady your shots (the act of pressing the shutter button is enough to jiggle the camera and blur the picture on long exposures) but I think it's a 12 second selt-timer with no short time option. Most cameras nowadays have a two or three second option on the self-timer.
Hope this helps,
Greg
