just got back from the depot with the plumbing supply's to hook up my over flow and 2 pieces of glass plus a shiny new glass cutter to build my sump .

looking for tips on cutting the glass as i have never done it before. i only picked up what i needed so i am hoping for a one shot deal no mishaps.

oh and on a side note is 100% silicone good ?

yep found some good info on youtube but it appears i need cutting oil that i did not get is there another type of oil that can be used instead?

still need the silicone ? answered too.
thanks

never used a lubricating oil, just scored the pane and snapped it,
when i glued the glass in my sump i picked up aquarium silicone. im pretty sure you want to make sure its not anti bacterial.

The Depot sells aquarium safe silicone in the paint section near the glue. Its in small tubes that are aqua blue in color. I am sure that you could find some in the large tubes that has the same chemical make up but I didnt chance it, I bought what they said on the box was safe.

So the answer I have is NO the 100% would not be a good idea. Think about it, potentially 1000s of dollars at risk over some $4.00 glue.....

Only score it once. If you think you missed a spot don't go back and try again. Snap it on the edge of a bench or counter. I like to place a board on top of the piece of glass that stays the bench. I position it about 1/4" back from the score. It helps keep the corners from breaking if your score is weak near the edges.

Wear gloves

It's a snap!!

I took my glass to get cut in Middletown to middlle town glass they cut it for very cheep and they know what they are doing. It's worth looking into and def get the right silicon I know someone who did not and it was a very bad move on his part (no names) he knows who he is. good luck

I found DAP aquarium safe silicone at Lowes. It is in the same section with all of their glues/special adhesives in the paint area. FYI - the package doesn't look like this any more. It says "household" on the package now, but still says aquarium safe. Also, use in a well ventilated area. It has a strong acetic acid (white vinegar) smell to it.

DAP 2.8 oz aquarium sealant

FWIW I've used GE Silicone I for windows and doors for several sumps and resealing tanks - its perfectly safe. The stuff for kitchen and bath has the antibacterial additive, "Bioseal" its called on the label.

well i did not the prettiest but its done. i just hope i didn't go to high up with the glass. time will tell on that one.
