Going to Home Depot to buy a light...

I'm, going to buy a light for my refuge with some cheato in it. Can anyone reccomend a good bulb to get? Last time I was at Home Depot, they didn't have any of the flood bulbs with the "K" ratings. Are there other options out there that I can use in the meantime as I order a better bulb on-line?

i just use the plant bulb that looks like a flood light...it works good...i have never tried the flood bulb so i cant compair the two...

I've been using the cheap setup as described in the attached write up by melev. I use the spiral compact flourescent shown near the top of the article along with a reflector. I think the whole setup was like 10 bucks and has served me pretty well. He recommends others on there as well.

thats what I am looking for but I can't seem to find those bulbs with the "K" ratings in Home Depot.

Not sure which one you're looking for, but mine was in a package that was almost identical to the package shown for the spiral compact flourescent. Daylight 75 watt. I don't remember if it listed the K rating or not on it. There was another bulb just like it on the shelf that wasn't the daylight version, so I'm sure it would be much more "soft white". The one I have is a very bright white light.

nubomb,

I tried the coiled cp floodlight bulb recommenced by melev. I put two over my 20 gallon refugium. They worked OK but growth was slower than I liked so I upgraded to the floodlight fixture from HD in avi's link. They do sell them at Home Depot for $39.99. Under this light my chaeto took off and grew much faster. IME every time I add IRON my chaeto gets a darker green and grows faster.

If you go to that webpage:

http://www.lightsofamerica.com/floods.htm

and you click on Specifications (at the lower right-hand corner of the page), you'll see that there are four model numbers and three of them use the 6500K bulb...they are:

9027, 9265 and 9266 .

I also tried the spiral lights recommended at the Melev site. I had to give up on them though because I got no Chaeto growth with them at all. It may have been that the bulb was too high. But, I mounted the the flood that's in the Lights of America site to an electical box that I mounted under the tank-stand and that, along with the light's mounting bracket got it down lower and closer to the Chaeto...in any event...the growth took off and I have to harvest all the time now.

home depot sells a work light that is a power compact bulb inside of a water proof container. i personally have not used one but ive had friends in the past use them over refugiums with good results. pretty nice little set up all wired and ready to go.
