Goniopora?! Am I the Only one?

It is a cleaner shrimp, I have two of them and they never touch my goni or alveopra. But they do steal food from my blasto's and zoa's/paly's.

But they are a neat addition to the tank (~1 year), and my marine betta hasn't eaten them yet.

Cheers

i really don't understand the feeding. mine is just about 2 yrs old. it's on the sandbed of my 75 and lit by 6x 54 t-5s. it has grown new branches over this time. and i don't spot feed it anything!
Yours is a different species than most of the common oncs.

It's gorgeous! I have the goniopora addiction. I wish I had a bigger tank, I am at my limit with them as they will probably outgrow my tank. They like to reach out and fry their neighbors..:p
I would love to have a blue, yellow, and the pink/green tenuidens.

what are your water parameters? for keeping these.

You're the one leading the way :D. Your gonis' and alveo looks nice and healthy!

Ahh but you are my mentor..

Thanks for the nice compliment. They are my most pridefully posessed corals. Hope you and the mrs. are doing well!

Here's another shot of them all happy and poofy..:D

Have you ever seen a pink centered alveopora? I need to get a pic of it, it's really pretty!

I've got 3 different Goni at the moment.

1 G. pendulus
1 G. eclipsensis
1 G. pandoraensis

Pictures aren't the best, but you get the idea... Going on a year with the first two and several months with the last.

As far as I've found, they will not fight with each other too much. The green one (pendulus) has been next to both of the other two, and nothing bad has happened.

nice!
I think that i am going to feed mine twice a week with cyclopeeze.
Is that good enough?
To see nice growth should i up the anti a lil?

You should be fine with feeding twice a week. Unless you have a really good skimmer/flow, I wouldn't feed much more as you will end up with an algae problem.

I feed mine once a week now (sometimes two) and they have continued to grow and do well. When I first got them, though, they were in poor health so I fed every other day for a couple months, then slowly weaned them down to what it is now.

Awesome corals, I wish more people had the dedication to keep them!

Can these goniporas touch each other without harm?
In my experience no. Both the red & purple goni I keep are extremely aggressive and will cook whatever they touch. The aleveopora however, does not sting anything.<< that I have seen anyway
Beautiful gonis Jokergirl!

Thanks waterfaller. I attribute all my success to John.

That's weird that you've seen aggression in your Goni. Mine have been up close and personal with each other and quite a few of my other corals, including candy canes, with no ill effects whatsoever. Other than getting the enlarged nematocyst now and then, mine have been passive.

Ok, who amongst you Goni fans has had yours longer than 12-14 months. All the warnings I've read about these corals mention that they often seem to thrive for up to about a year & then crash catastrophically. Not trying to start anything, but I'm still nervous about trying these without serious experience. ( On the other hand, I've also heard Julian Sprung has learned the secrets for keeping them. Anyone read this?)

Matthew

What is nematocyst?
I just got home fomr the LFS!
I got a new aleveopora!
Its so nice!
Brownish with light teal mouths!
So amazing!

My theory is aggression in gonis is based on species. I think you can put 2 gonis of the same species right on top of each other with no issues, but when you put 2 of different species you may run into trouble. In the long run these aren't very aggressive corals. In a vat at the LFS around here I have seen up to 10 stokesis crammed in so that you couldn't even see the bottom of the vat. It looked like one big goni with no problems. Needless to say I bought one and it is doing well in my holding tank.

Do any of you use Protein skimmers on your reefs with these goni's???..... I heard they need really nutrient rich water..... or does it not matter if you feed them well and the lighting is right????........

I use a Euro-reef RS135 on my 120 with no problems whatsoever as far as them not getting enough nutrient. In all reality, I've found that they extend better with cleaner water then they do with dirty water.

Serioussnaps, if it is species based, then why have my three never fought. In my 90g, I had them butted up right next to each other with absolute no problems at all.
