Goniopora?! Am I the Only one?

kmjoen - nematocysts or cnidocytes are stinging cells that all corals (cnidarians) have, some are more potent than others. Theyre used to capture food, for self defense, and to attack nearby animals that compete for space.

Do any of you use Protein skimmers on your reefs with these goni's???..... I heard they need really nutrient rich water..... or does it not matter if you feed them well and the lighting is right????........

Mine is in an SPS dominant growout. I have it in the corner under a Tunze 6000 but block flow from hitting it using live rock. I rip nutrients out of my tank and find it(stokesi) actually does better in LOW nutrient environments than in HIGH nutrient tanks. I don't think this has anything to do necessarily with dissolved organics but that low nutrient tanks are usually better cared for by the owner.

I still feed....ripping nutrients/Doc's/fatty acids out of the water is a beneficial thing as it allows you to FEED MORE by using a good skimmer.

John Kelly also believes a lower nutrient, well maintained tank in which one can feed more is a better environment.

dont always believe what you are told is the moral to the story

I use a Euro-reef RS135 on my 120 with no problems whatsoever as far as them not getting enough nutrient. In all reality, I've found that they extend better with cleaner water then they do with dirty water.

Serioussnaps, if it is species based, then why have my three never fought. In my 90g, I had them butted up right next to each other with absolute no problems at all.

I said those of the SAME species WOULD NOT clash. I never said if they were different they WOULD, but if you were to ever see a clash between two goni's it would be between different species IF it occurred.

Its the misunderstanding of necessity versus sufficiency in the way you read my diction which has you confused.

How is this achieved?

If you are exporting nutrients efficiently then this allows you to input them more. Nutrients generally come from feeding and fish waste. Good flow with skimming, water changes, denitrators, GFO's, Carbon dosing, mechanical filtration, activated carbon I could go on with the list of the ways to export N and P but the better you do it the more you can feed.
