4 months ago i bought a piece from the lfs, not even sure which type altho i think lobata due to brown polyps.after the fact, i found it was not a wise buy, however i placed it on the sand at the bottom of my 75 with 6x 54 t-5s. heres the deal, it's definately growing with lots of new tiny polyps, but today while cleaning inside the tank i caused the polyps to retract for a while. this is where my question comes from. i noticed the coral itself has turned from an off white color to a light green color. it doesn't appear to be algea of any type but the color of the skeliton. is this normal or is the poop about to hit the fan? thanks bob

Do you mean the coral looks more green when it is retracted than it used to?

This is due to the change in lighting intensity. You must have it under more intense lighting than it was previously.

yes, i mean the coral skeleton has taken on a green hue. the colony itself looks healthy with good polyp extention

The green hue on the skeleton could be algae. I had a yellow sponge grown on mine, the skeleton seems to attract anything like lr.

I think the last you need is a cleanup crew trampling over a Goni,
Iwould guess seeing I now have 4 of em, you are seeing the completely retracted polyps, which will take on a much brighter hue, till they extend and of course the colour weakens.
I could be wrong, I normally am.
I think they are a brilliant animal, but as you have found out you gotta watch em.
Try a Google search, lots of info out there, and it is not all doom and gloom.
Good luck

Dan...
He's talking about the skeleton turning green.
The polyps are extending fine.

Knew I would get it all wrong,,
Have a look at www.goniopora.org and ave a word with John Kelly, but I agree, if your getting full extention then all should be OK, I think I have seen various discusstions about sitgting them directly on sand, as any polyps lower down can be suspect to infection, then the dreaded brown jelly.
I make a plinth out of epoxy, and try to make sure the delicate polyps dont touch anything, which isnt easy as they can extend a fair amount.
good luck
