Good clam tank price?

I talked to a custom tank builder today. He quoted me $180 for a custom 36Lx36Wx12H. Is this a fair price? It incudes two 1" or 3/4" holes. BTW- Its about 67g

I am not sure Im really even going to do this. I have practicly no cash right now, but really feel like a new project. I am getting a summer job though, so I willl have some cash flow:)

The tank will be skimmerless, with only a single fish. Instead of a traditional sump, I am going to connect the tank directly to a refugium, under the stand. The refugium will be a macro heaven! Since Im not going to house corals, I will be able to get away with much less flow than I have in my SPS tank. Im going to DIY the rock, Ca reactor, and stand.

Lighting will be accomplished by an advanced core and coil 250w balast running a pet supply liquidater 10k bulb. No actinics I dont think.

After seeing the recent clam tanks, I have to do one too!:D

Sounds fair to me

Sounds fair to me

Provided the quality is high and the finish is professional. The price of the tank is going to be the *least* of your worries....

And I thought I had a "square" tank with my 40B.

Why the refug though, if you are getting this shape of tank to pakc it with clams, and you are only going to keep one fish, the last thing you are going to want is a refug pulling out the tiny bit of nitrate that will available for the clams.

Also, look into growing your own phyto with a tank like this fully stocked you are going to be keeping thousands of dollars worth of clams, treat them right and feed them. Also, I would reccommend a ca reactor.

Mad Scientist- I wont have a skimmer, so I am going to need the refugium, IMO.

I have been revising my plans. I am going to DIY the tank. $100 will get me all the acrylic (cut, I dont want to cut it myself- again. I have A TON of Weld on 16 too! So basically for $100 in acrylic I can make two. It is going to be my upgrade from the 58g. The refugium/sump is going to be replaced with either a 75g (I have one available, possibly) or a large rubbermaid.

Now you might ask, why do I need two? I am going to keep my current corals in one, and the clams in another. The SPS section is going to be elevated above the clam 'lagoon', connected via an overflow. The clam tank will the overflow back into the sump, and the return pump will pump ba

Not sure Ill be carying this whole project out, but I really feel like it might happen.

I already have a Ca reactor- it is going to be transfered from the 58g, which will be dismantled. I am going to use the 400w 20k over that on the SPS reef crest tank, and use a (250w maybe- GASP!) 10k over the clam 'lagoon'

Liverock will be located sparsely in the main shallow tanks, with most of it being in the sump/refugium. There will be a DSB in each tank, with the refugium's being about 10". and the two main tanks will have about a 5" bed.

Fish load, will be minimal. If I get the go ahead from the tang police, I will add a Kole tang to the SPS tank, and a small group of 6- line wrasses to the clam tank, in hopes of pyramilade snail (spelling?) control. I know tangs need a 4ft tank, and a minimum of 75g is reccomended, however since the tank is also MUCH wider than most 4 (or 6 ft tanks), I dont see why it wouldnt have enough room to swim. According to Scott Michael, groups of 6 lines can be maintained, but I will do some more researching on this.

I have a connection with a clam aquaculturer in Hawaii, so maybe I wont need to be spending thousands of doallars just on the clams;) I will nonetheless, be growing phyto most likely.

Overall system volume will be in the neighborhood of about 200g. Very exciting time!

Be watching the For sale forums:D,

Halichoeres for pyramidellid

Halichoeres for pyramidellid

John,

I would skip on the sixline wrasse and opt instead for a Halichoeres species (one or two). Just make sure you know which one you are getting, because some can get med. - large in a minireef tank. I believe all the Halichoeres species are considered "reef-safe". Hope I spelled that right. :D

Oh, they do eat Stomatella var., tho. At least mine does. Kind of a minor loss for pyramellid predation. ;) I believe the wrasse I have is Halichoeres melanospus, but that spelling is probably wrong, and that species (minding the spelling, gets around 7" according to text).
