Just came back from a Chinese supermarket. In their live fish section they had a TANK of gigantic mantis shrimp. I estimate they had at least 50, and the smallest was maybe 8" in length. For $10.99 a pound you can buy as many as you want :) Too bad I didn't have my camera, you all would have been impressed.

They were pretty colorful, too - not just the drab brown ones.

This is the species that I was desparately trying to find for some experiments we are conduction. If anyone can send us some live ones, we will pay for them (more than $10 a pound) plus shipping.

The address of the store was:

1015 Nogales St.
Rowland Heights, CA

If you go to this address, you will see that it is a small indoor mall. I went there because there used to be a small aquarium store in the mall, but it is now closed. As I was getting ready to leave, I saw the grocery store at the end of the mall (it is the largest store - like the mall "anchor"). There was a huge sign on the back of the store that said "LIVE FISH" so I had to go check it out. They have some BIG fish back there - including a couple of gianormous wrasses/hog fishes that had to be a couple feet long. They have lots of live crabs, lobsters, oysters, eels, etc. You gotta love the signs that warn about things pinching your fingers and that the store claims no liability if you get hurt messing with the live stock :) Much of the stuff was self-serve; you just walk up and grab a couple crabs and toss 'em in a bag. The mantis were spooky - they were stacked in the tank two or three deep. The tank was plexi, but even then it was a little intimidating to tap on the plexi to see if I could get a reaction. They were all very aware - and were just begging me to lower my finger into the tank :)

Good luck if you go there - and take a camera, it is pretty cool.

How far from Burbank, do you know?

Just go on Yahoo! Maps or Mapquest and plot from your location to the address. In addition to directions, it will give you total mileage. I would guess about 20 miles.

Maybe I can pick some up for you. How many are you looking for? Let me know if you're still interested.

got em already dust, it's a fair drive too!

if you were thinking of keeping them as a pet think again as a chiller is a necessary investment along with a 30 gallon tank and preformed cave to hide in. check out the one at the Cabrillo museum in san pedro!

seeing a 120 gallon tank pilled 5 deep with the one of the world's most formidable mantis is a sad thing =(

I told you they had a lot. It was wierd seeing them all piled up. Also, that tank of cold water lobster - they were stacked to the top.

That place must move some serious live seafood volume.

someone please take some pics and post them when you go visit

if i was still in SoCal, i would definately want to see a tank of mantis

wonder if they fight ?
