I was thinking of doing some halides for a 5 gallon tank. Don't no if i should, havent read much about them. Has anyone done this, if so where did you get your halides and around what price...

do you realize with that bulb, your putting 30+ watts per gallon on the tank. seeing how the recommendation is 4-6 watts per gal, I would be prepared to coat your corals with a nice layer of sun tan lotion. Way over kill, go T5 or cf, they will be fine for a 5 gal.

try doing a search on LEDs.

for a 5 gallon tank, I'd try these
LEDs

if you buy the dc version, you can cut them to size.

I would think that you would be interested in the newer high output LEDs in the 1Watt, 3Watt and 5Watt class to do this (which actually requires some method of heat dissipation). A high output LED seems like a great solution because it can be more efficient than traditional methods of illumination resulting in lower operating costs and little heat generation. For example, a 3Watt LED puts out as much as 70 lumens.

However, LED's provide no source of UV light which is the reason that corals produce color pigmentation in the first place. It is the protective pigments that provide the intense colors you see and without the UV light I would think the colors will fade resulting in a brown tank.

I have a 70w halide over my 7g tank...no heat problems, and no coral problems. Just keep it at least 8 inches off the water, and add some computer fans to the hood, and you should be all set.

should i do the bright white or shuld i get the Ultra Violet Purple?????

Do some research before you buy, I'd do a combo of both packing as many over the tank as you can. There's an interesting article here.

You could add a really big, cheap Rubbermaid sump, and not have to worry about temperature issues..

LEDs sound like the most fun to me, but if you want to go crazy and get a halide you can get a 70 watt like frank suggested (still a LOT of light).
