Hammer vs. Acan Echinata

Through-out history there have those epic battles.
Ali vs. Frazier
Hagler vs. Leonard
Da Bears vs. F5 Tornado (Gotta Love SNL)
The Rock 'n' Roll Express vs. The Midnight Express!!!
Ok I threw those last two in there for a laugh.
When I came home from work this evening I found my Acan Echinata had fallen polyps down onto my Hammer Coral. We all have seen the damage that Hammers, Frog Spawn and Torch Corals can inflict when another coral strays within sweeper range. If you've kept an Acan close to other corals, you've probably seen the damage an Acan can dish out as well. So, my first thought when I saw the corals laying there, was "I wonder who took the worst beating?"

I had a similar circumstance. A bunch of zoa's fell right on top of an acan colony and sat for probably 4-6 hours. I lost a bunch of the zoa, and the acan was fine the next day.

is that a hammer or is that a frogspawn?

It’s definitely a hammer. LPS can sure hold there own. I just lost two torch heads when it tried to attack a neighboring colony of Acanthastrea maxima. The funny thing is the acan could never touch the torch, but the torch can touch it. Then the mesentary filaments traveled back on the torch corals sweeper and the rest is history. Both corals have recovered and the acan has a new home.

do hammer corals also branch out as frogspawns do?

Euphyllia Paranchora a.k.a. Branching Hammer

My hammer will be fine. It has a couple of new heads sprouting out and the other heads are back to normal now. I've fragged this hammer a few times in the past year. I still have 2 other small colonies around the tank. I get a kick out of one thats close to another Acan. It sends out its sweepers and keeps all other corals at bay. It won't touch that Acan though.

I was expecting to see shots of you fragging your acan with a hammer, lol.

I just had one of my chalices take out a frag of oceans blue stylophora. I was kicking myself for not getting a picture of it as it was wicked looking. The chalice had to reach out a good 2 inches to get at the stylo and it ensnared it completely in a webbing. needless to say the stylo is toast. A few months ago my acan echinata torched the whole half of my tubs chalice. Turned a 3"x 3" square of the chalice into grey goo. I blew it off and within two weeks the portion of the chalice that was goo had translucent tissue completely intact. Within two more weeks the color was returning completely. It was an amazing recovery...should have snapped photos of that as well. Hope to see your hammer looking better in a few weeks. The acan will be fine, those things are bullet proof and killers.

WAIT! What are the little brown things on the side of the hammer??? How big do they get??? They look a lot like a mystery thing-y at my LRS that I've been wondering about. . . He's said they were likely a corallimorph, but they're growing off of an LPS skeleton, like yours are. What IS that??? Is it part of the coral or is it something harmless that is growing there? I though the ones at the store were completely connected and not seperate "petals" like that, but this is the first time I've seen anything remotely similar to it before>_> Also, did they start out as just a few of them that were kinda small, and do they react when they are bumped into? Is it part of the coral growing new heads, or something just growing there?

Sorry to hijack :$

Great picture. I would like to see how both look in a week or so.

Here's a couple follow-up pics taken today.
