Hammer vs. gsp

I have a hammer coral and a gsp in my tank. The gsp was out a few hours after I put it in the tank, but has since been slowly recessing into the purple mat.(it has been in there for about a week) Yesterday when I bought a hammer coral the lfs guy said to move the gsp around until it opened up. I moved it and today it is not any better. The hammer is doing extremely well and is fully extended. I am wondering if there is any chemical warefare going on here or not. It is weird though because the gsp retracted before the addition of the hammer. Any thoughts?

Wow I have exactly the same problem. My green stars are fading away but all my other corals are doing very well. I know it's normal to close up on occasion and may last for a few days at a time. But its slowly dying back. Relocated many times with no change. Currenty It's on the opposite side of the tank of the other more aggressive corals. Sorry can't really help only offer sympathy. My water quality is right on.
One question to you is do you use any iodine. GSP's love it

Im sure it is fine. Mine is about 6in. away from my frogspawn (same as hammer) and it is doing fine. As long as the purple mat is not detaching from the rock you have nothing to worry about. Put it in a high flow area, that may help.

Check your alkalinity and ph: you can get distracted by a change you know about while another less visible is going on unnoticed. Just a maybe.
