Harlequin Shrimp Food

Sublime
You don't need a supply of live starfish to keep these shrimps.See if you can source some small Asterias rubens or similar, and freeze them,(if you can't collect your own,try a fish merchants-they are discards in the fishing industry)Just snip a bit off for each feed, the shrimp will pull out and eat the hydraulics leaving behind the spiny skin which is easily removed.I used to do this (see my post on WWM/harlequinshrimp)One starfish lasts a long time used this way and you wont have an injured, decaying animal in your tank.

mine seemed to sense it right when the starfish touched the water and started going after it. it was kinda cool.

Sublime
When I kept mine and fed them with a piece of thawed arm, because it was cut they smelled it almost immediately and actively searched it out with the lights on.I tied it to a length of fishing line for easy viewing and removal of the empty skin.

i put the whole star for both shrimps.

Wohh,

At first reading this post, I thought they Harlequin Shrimp were eating starfish of maybe 1/8 or 1/4 of their own size. But it is obviously not the case!!!

Nice picture Stephen.

In this scenario, will they eat a small portion of the starfish and leave it dying? It seems a lot of waste and a bit cruel. Or maybe I simply don't understand what's happening.
