Have any clams recently died of "disease"

I got 3 farmed clams in March and two of the three shortly developed the mantle pinching condition. FW dip per directions posted by Minh Nguyen cured the condition and it has not returned.

I had one clam that started developing pinched mantle. FW dip for 15 minutes and no problems from that moment forward.

I lost one about a month ago.. Had it for ~5 days before it croaked. The other three that I've had for about a year each have all done fine though.

One of the hallmarks of the disease

One of the hallmarks of the disease

was that it wiped out the existing clams in the tank as well. I only lost 3 (and I even quarantined the diseased clam for 3 weeks! :mad2: ) but others lost many more.

Have people been successful in adding new clams into tanks with existing clams? Have there been any cases of a tank being infected and established clams being wiped out recently?

FWIW, freshwater dip did NOTHING for my clams...

Mantle pinching is not solely caused by this disease.

So...

So...

I am getting that a couple clams here and there have died, but no massive tank wide wipeout cases lately?

I have a neon crocea and added another one from a fellow reefer's tank a few months ago and both are doing great. I've also bought frags and corals and such from places with the "disease" and haven't had any problems. I did lose my first clam ever, a crocea, last summer, but I believe that was my fault since I was new to clams and not a disease, as the clam I got a few months afterwards is still doing good to this day, knock on wood.

I'm very interested in this also. I lost my clams last year possibly to the "disease". Has anyone had a clam wipeout and successfully reintroduced clams since?

I lost my 2 clams after adding a phomphei maxima from FFE. After three months I tried a squamosa and a crochea from another west coast supplier and they died after about 10-14 days. My experience seemed to match what I was hearing described in threads at the time.

Honestly my Ca and Alk probablly weren't as high/stable as they should have been (maybe dropping to 370Ca and or 7dkh occasionally) around that time. lighting was 400w 10K MH and water movement pretty strong but with mild spots where the clams were placed. No nusiance algae problems at the time.

I'm wondering about clams now. I have since added a Ca reactor and my tank is quite a bit more stable. Any consensus if it's safe to try a clam again?

thanks

Hey Gusty,

I also experienced that clam wipeout along with everyone else. I chose to not medicate my tank and just wait it out.

I got a derasa from Tropical Paradise a month ago thats doing fine. I also picked up a crocea from Eddy 2 weeks ago.

So far so good.

Since this post, I have added a crocea, maxima and derasa.

The crocea and derasa are doing great. The maxima died of unrelated causes. It was a very small clam, and I think it had been mistreated.

I guess it is safe now.

The only thing that had me worried about the clams at TP and why I didn't buy any is I saw quite a few curled in mantles on the maximas.

JimmyJ: I has a mass wipeout of clams last summer and have reintroduced clams (after saving 2 derasas via FW dip...wish I knew about the dip from the start...)

Anyhow...I have not had any reoccurence of the disease until about a month ago when I switched salts. I am not saying CS salt caused the disease itself, but rather perhaps it was laying dormant until the clams were susceptible to it once again via stress from the reaction of salt mixing...needless to say I redipped ( and did about 450g of water changes with my original salt) and did lose one but now it seems I am in the clear again...BTW, I haven't added new clams in over 4 months...

The max died due to mistreatment.

It was a small unhealthy clam I got at a very cheap price due to it's obvious poor health.

I took a chance, and hoped for the best, but it didn't work out.

It has since been several weeks since the death, and during the wipeout, every clam was dead within 3 weeks of adding a diseased clam. They had started showing symptoms 1 week after the addition of the sick clam.

The clams currently in my tank show no signs of illness. I don't think it is unsafe due to the loss of a small, bleached, and unhappy maxima.

Hmmmm. Anyone care to guess the LFS the clam came from? That is, if it came form an LFS. I've done the so cheap can't resist thing too. I usually end up unlucky with the gamble.
