HD or Lowes sand experience

well i've been searching around and looking at sand from HD and Lowes. can some one tell what kind of sand they used and how it went?

we used 60 lbs of live fiji sand in a 55 and everything went perfect! little expensive though

I have a DSB in my 3 year old 150. I used 3 50lb bags of Southdown and it worked great. I am setting up a 30 gallon and searched the threads on sand, it looks like they dont sell the agro sand the reefers want anymore. All thats available is the silica sand. Do a search on Old Castle Sand.

i used the playsand from HD, the kind with the blue Playsand on the bags. its silica sand. the only complant is the color isnt as white as i would like.

I used 50lbs monteray beach sand from HD, what a good deal. Too bad I had unstoppable diatomacaous(not sure how to spell it) brown algae. Ended up getting aragonite and will never go back.

hmmm funny how so many of us dont have algae problems with silica sand.

I used HD sand- I have algae problems, but thats cause I WAY overfeed the tank compared to other people... mysis shrimp twice a day will cause algae in ANY tank.

I've used it before in other tanks that weren't overfed... wanna see?

you go find the algae!!!! the tank was a few months-half a year old when the pics were taken.

I used this from home depot. I saw in another forum about a paver sand from lowes that looks like carib sea. Anyways I used this stuff in my 55 softcoral tank with no problems. I even added a little carib sea from my 180 and it looks great, it does have silica but it was only 2 bucks for a 50 lb bag.

All the HD's around me sell Durascape white sand. There may be some silica in it, but it passed the old vinegar test. It is packaged by Old Castle.

I used about 300 lbs in mine. It is very dusty, and takes a few weeks to stop blowing around easily. Other than that, I like it fine.

thanx everyone for all the help guys. i'm setting up a 40 gallon breeder and i don't know what kind of sand to put in my tank. James77 how long have you had this sand in your tank?
