Are there any heaters that won't crack or break if it gets exposed above water when it's on?

I don't think so. The titanium ones might be more resilient, but I suspect they'd break or do something unpleasant if left out of the water.

I agree Jon, the titatium don't break from heat but they do burn out if run in the air. Titanium is also fairly brittle and can be cracked if impacted.

I have 2 visotherm stealth heaters. 1 is in my sw tank, 1 is in my fw tank. Once they are turned off they can be taken out. Also if they are on and taken out, they turn off automatically.

Good point Wannabe. Another thing is to use fully submersible heaters. Having the heater at the bottom of the tank keeps it safe and gives better heat circulation as the warmed water rises.
