Heavy breathing for a week

I recently introduced what I thought was a healthy fish into my tank. Well apparently it wasn't too healthy and after a few hours I removed it and it later died.

I don't know whether I am paranoid, but it seems like my other fish have increased their breathing rate.

Now their rate is about 2 breaths per second.

Is that considered heavy breathing?

There are no other visible signs of disease and they are all eating fine. No other visible change in behavior.

I don't remember what their breathing rate was before this, just seems like it has increased.

Just wait and see?

You might be paranoid, but it could be warranted. You may want to QT your fishs in the future. Observe your fishs on a daily basis and see if anything has changed or other weird things attach to your fishs.

Then you start worrying and research more on treatments.

You might try garlic-laced sinking food. It's a general tonic, but it also, whether through increased sliming, or its presence in the body, tends to discourage ich...which can occasionally manifest in the gills and not be visible elsewhere. The garlic doesn't hurt anything, at worst, and might help, at best. Even the corals don't mind it.

not paranoid at all - it was a serious mistake to add fish without quarantine - i recommend quarantining all fish religiously, and if the fish is not too expensive, assume it has some parasite and treat prophylactically.
what to do? it depends on how much you have invested in the fish. if not too much in relation to corals, rocks, inverts, i'd recommend wait and see. otherwise, immediate action a la hypo/formalin dips will have to be considered.
